Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin. Folic acid is needed by both children and adults to produce red blood cells and prevent anemia. Mothers during pregnancy are also strongly advised to consume lots of foods that contain folic acid. This is to prevent premature birth or defects, including defects of the nervous system (the brain) or a neural tube defect.
